To remove background from image files online, select your picture, click Remove Background, and download the result as a transparent PNG. It’s free, and the AI runs in your browser, so your photo is never sent to a server.
This image background remover free tool keeps the person or object and clears everything behind it. What you get back is a cutout you can drop onto a new background, a presentation, a poster or a product page.

The result is a PNG with a transparent background. That detail matters. A JPG can’t hold transparency, while PNG supports it through an alpha channel. This lets the removed areas stay transparent instead of filling them with a solid colour.
When you use this PNG background remover, the checkerboard pattern you see in the preview is just how screens show transparent areas. It isn’t part of the image.
Select the image, click Remove Background, and download the PNG.
Press Select Image, or drag a photo into the box.
Press Remove Background.
Wait for the AI to finish. A message and a preview appear below.
Check the preview, then press Download PNG.

I used a portrait and pressed Remove Background. The preview showed the person on a transparent checkerboard, and the details panel read: Format PNG (transparent), Dimensions 1024 × 1536 px, File size 2680.3 KB.
In my test, the output kept the same 1024 × 1536 pixel dimensions. The file size was 2680.3 KB.
If you get a transparent file this heavy and a form or website has a size limit, run it through our Reduce Image Size in KB tool afterwards.

Background removal works by identifying the main subject and separating it from the surrounding background. The quality depends heavily on the image you provide.
Photos tend to cut out cleanly when:
The subject is clearly different from what’s behind it, such as a dark jacket on a light wall.
The subject is in focus and well lit.
Edges are simple. A smooth shirt is easier than loose hair or fur.
Trouble spots are busy backgrounds, a subject and background in the same colour, and thin details like wisps of hair. Always zoom into the edges of your preview before you download. If one area looks rough, try a sharper photo or a plainer wall behind you and run it again.
Product photos: clear away a table or a messy room and place the item on white or a brand colour.
Profile pictures: cut yourself out and add a colour behind you in any editor.
Thumbnails and posters: place a person on top of artwork without a box around them.
Resume and portfolio: if you need a background remover for CV photos, cut your portrait out here and add a plain colour behind it in your resume editor.
Presentations: paste a logo or object on a slide with no white rectangle.
Need a passport or ID photo with a white background? Our Passport Size Photo tool is made for that.
Two common reasons. First, the image was opened in a viewer that paints a background behind it, so it only looks white. Second, you saved or exported it again as a JPG, which drops transparency.
Keep the file as PNG, and place it on a design or slide to see the clear areas working.
On a phone, open this page in Chrome or Safari, tap Select Image, choose a photo from your gallery and save the PNG when it’s done.
On Windows or Mac, drop the file onto the box. You don't need a separate image-editing app. You can use the tool directly in your browser.
